Sport Tasman are a Regional Sports Trust based within and operating across five geographic regions at the Top of the South Island. Their aspiration is that everyone in the top of the south has equitable access to high quality physical activity opportunities and experiences that meet their needs. However, there are those within some communities who face greater barriers than others to being active. Therefore, in order to achieve their aspiration, they must first focus on those who face the greatest inequity. This requires an insights driven focus, to address and overcome barriers that prevent physical activity being accessible and normalised in some communities.
Sport Tasman's approach is a focus on sector leadership and sector capability, working directly with partners to advocate for and influence, rather than deliver. This requires a need to build deep relationships with partners and will look different with each sector partner, be they Iwi, Council, Sport or Active Recreation Organisation, School, Funder, Health Agency, Facility Provider, Disability Organisation or Community Body.
Insights and data gathering will understand the needs of communities to guide advocacy and support directly to those who provide physical activity opportunities through Sport, Active Recreation and Play.
They focus resources in areas where there is the greatest need but also the greatest opportunity to drive and derive impact. By focusing their resource in this way, Sport Tasman believe it will provide the best chance to establish meaningful and sustainable change progressing incrementally towards
Disabled tamariki and rangatahi are a priority group, as they often face barriers and miss out on opportunities to participate. In partnership with Halberg, Sport Tasman’s Disability Advisor works across communities and organisations to advocate for inclusive programme design, build sector capability informed by lived experience, and ensure all individuals can be active in ways that matter to them.
Sport Tasman's aim is to achieve equity in physical activity by ensuring disabled tamariki and rangatahi have access to meaningful opportunities, with inclusive practice embedded across play, active recreation, and sport.
