HRC Te Otu Mātua is a time-limited intervention for rangatahi with complex behaviours who experience neurodiverse challenges such as ASD, intellectual impairments, specific learning disabilities, ADHD, and trauma, as well as a range of similar presentations that may not have been diagnosed. Our vision for each of our students is “Whakarangatirahia/Be the best you can be”.

They believe that working together, equals better outcomes for the rangatahi we support. “Nā to rourou, nā taku rourou, ka ora ai te iwi”. As such, the family, enrolling school, and referrer play an integral role, during a student’s stay at HRC.

Their focus is always on supporting a student to develop the skills they will need when they leave HRC. To achieve this, they work in partnership with the student’s family, enrolling school and referrer to develop and support implementation of an Individual Education Plan (IEP). They emphasise development of emotional, social and regulation skills essential to being ready to learn, focus on literacy, numeracy, health and physical education, and use integrated learning for digital technology, te Reo, NZ history, science, social studies, the arts, and technology. The bespoke HRC Residential Curriculum is designed to assist ākonga to interact with their environment as independently as possible and to develop a sense of worthiness that will enable them to become contributing members of society.
